Start by choosing an installation format and measuring its location or cabinet opening. Then compare rack layout, cycle options, drying method and the energy information for the exact model. Installation requirements and features vary, so use its dimension guide and manual before purchase.
Choose a dishwasher format that fits your kitchen, holds the dishes you wash and has cycles and care directions that suit your routine. Compare the ENERGY STAR qualification and EnergyGuide information for the exact model, then verify its installation requirements before ordering.
| Buyer decision | What to check |
|---|---|
| Installation format | Choose built-in, compact, portable or countertop based on the space and connections available. Portable and countertop models still need a measured location. |
| Opening and door clearance | For a built-in model, measure the available width, height and depth, then check the model’s dimension guide, installation manual and open-door clearance. |
| Capacity and rack layout | Compare the stated place-setting capacity, rack adjustability, utensil tray and space for your largest plates, pots and pans. |
| Wash cycles and sensing | Match the model’s listed cycles and soil-sensing features to the kinds of loads you run. Cycle names and availability vary by model. |
| Drying and care | Check the specified drying method, removable filters, cleaning steps and replacement parts in the model’s care instructions. |
| Energy and water use | Compare the ENERGY STAR status and EnergyGuide information for the exact size class and model. |
Measure the installation space first
For a built-in model, measure the cabinet opening rather than estimating from the old machine’s front panel. Whirlpool notes that a dishwasher advertised as 24 inches wide can be narrower because the label may describe the opening it is designed to fit. Include the height, depth, plumbing and electrical connections, toe-kick area and room needed to open the door and slide out racks. Portable and countertop models do not need a cabinet opening, but you still need to measure their location and check their utility connections.
Use the exact manufacturer’s planning dimensions and installation instructions before purchase. A replacement may need different hoses, cords, drain routing or clearances. For a new location or a change to utilities, check local requirements and use a qualified installer when needed.
Compare racks, cycles and drying
Compare the interior with the actual dishes and cookware you wash. A third rack or adjustable tines can help with some load shapes, but the listed capacity alone does not show whether a large pan or plate fits. Check the model’s rack diagrams and dimensions.
Cycle labels and drying methods vary. Look for the normal and heavy-duty options you will use, any soil sensor, and how the manufacturer describes heated, condensation or other drying. Follow the model’s care guide for filters and detergent rather than assuming every dishwasher is maintained the same way.
Read the energy and water information
ENERGY STAR’s current residential dishwasher criteria distinguish standard and compact size classes. The criteria effective July 19, 2023 set maximum annual energy use of 240 kWh and water use of 3.2 gallons per cycle for standard models, and 155 kWh and 2 gallons per cycle for compact models. These are qualification limits, not a prediction of an individual household’s bill.
The FTC’s yellow EnergyGuide label gives estimated annual energy use and cost information and a comparison range for similar products. Compare similar-size models and remember that actual costs vary with local rates, cycle choice and use. Common questions
How do I know if a dishwasher will fit my kitchen?
For a built-in model, measure the cabinet opening's width, height and depth, plus room for the open door. For a portable or countertop model, measure its parking space and access to the sink and power. Compare with the exact model's dimension guide and installation instructions.
What does an ENERGY STAR dishwasher rating mean?
ENERGY STAR's current criteria limit standard-size qualified models to 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle, and compact models to 155 kWh per year and 2 gallons per cycle. Compare the qualification details and label for the exact model and size class.
What dishwasher features should I compare?
Check the rack and utensil layout, cycle names, soil-sensing options, drying method and filter-care instructions against the dishes you wash most often. A feature list does not show whether the racks fit your cookware, so inspect the exact interior layout.
Can I use an EnergyGuide label to compare dishwashers?
Yes. The FTC says the yellow label provides estimated energy use and cost information and a range for similar models. Use it to compare similar-size dishwashers; your actual cost depends on use and local energy prices.
